Saint Charles is a city in, and the county seat of, St. Charles County, Missouri, United States. It lies to the northwest of St. Louis. The city was founded in 1769 as "Les Petites Côtes" by Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader. It is the third-oldest city in Missouri.

Saint Charles was founded in 1769 by Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader, and was originally known as "Les Petites Côtes" ("The Little Hills"). The city played a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States, serving as the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804.
