Sahel

Sahel (pronounced /səˈhɛl/) is a term with multiple meanings in different contexts. In the context of geography, it refers to a semi-arid region of Africa between the Sahara desert and the Sudanian Savanna. However, in a medical context, Sahel is a term used to describe a region in Africa that is often affected by malnutrition and related health issues due to its harsh environmental conditions.

Etymology

The term Sahel comes from the Arabic word ساحل (sāḥil) meaning "coast" or "shore". It was historically used to describe the transitional zone between the arid Sahara desert to the north and the more fertile regions to the south.
