STOVIA
STOVIA (pronounced: /stoʊviə/), an acronym for School Tot Opleiding Van Inlandsche Artsen, is a historical term referring to a medical school established in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia) in 1851. The school was the first of its kind in the region, aimed at training native doctors to serve the local population.
Etymology
The term "STOVIA" is derived from the Dutch phrase School Tot Opleiding Van Inlandsche Artsen, which translates to "School for the Training of Native Doctors". The school was established during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia.
History
STOVIA was established in 1851 as a response to the need for medical professionals in the Dutch East Indies. The school was initially met with resistance from the local population, but eventually gained acceptance and produced many notable alumni. STOVIA was later replaced by the Geneeskundige Hogeschool (Medical College) in 1927, which eventually became the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Indonesia.
