SM-102
SM-102 is a proprietary ionizable lipid used in the formulation of lipid nanoparticles. It is a crucial component in the delivery system of mRNA vaccines, specifically the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna.
Composition
SM-102 is a synthetic lipid. In the context of mRNA vaccines, it is combined with three other lipids to create a lipid nanoparticle. This nanoparticle encapsulates the mRNA, protecting it from degradation and facilitating its delivery into cells.
Role in mRNA Vaccines
The primary role of SM-102 in mRNA vaccines is to form lipid nanoparticles that can deliver the mRNA into cells. Once inside the cell, the mRNA instructs the cell to produce a protein that triggers an immune response.
Safety and Toxicity
Concerns have been raised about the safety of SM-102 due to a safety data sheet from the manufacturer that lists it as potentially harmful. However, this refers to the chloroform solution in which SM-102 is delivered, not the lipid itself. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have both stated that the amount of SM-102 in the Moderna vaccine is safe for use in humans.
