Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) is a civil network of scientific research institutions in the Russian Federation, which serves as the primary body responsible for conducting scientific research and development in the country. It was founded by Peter the Great in Saint Petersburg on 28 January 1724, making it one of the oldest scientific institutions in Russia.

History

The establishment of the RAS was part of Peter the Great's efforts to transform Russia into a modern state by importing Western technology and creating a governmental structure to support its acquisition.
