Earth Sciences (pronunciation: /ɜːrθ saɪənsɪz/), also known as geosciences, is a broad term that encompasses various scientific disciplines that study the Earth and its many natural phenomena. The term is derived from the Old English 'eorþe' meaning 'ground, soil, dry land', and the Latin 'scientia' meaning 'knowledge'.

Sub-disciplines

Earth Sciences is a multidisciplinary field that includes several sub-disciplines, each focusing on a specific aspect of the Earth. These include:

  • Geology: The study of solid Earth, including its rocks, minerals, and the processes by which they change over time.
  • Meteorology: The study of the atmosphere and its phenomena, including weather and climate.
  • Oceanography: The study of the ocean, including its physical and biological aspects.
  • Paleontology: The study of the history of life on Earth through the examination of plant and animal fossils.
  • Geophysics: The study of the physical properties and processes of the Earth and its surrounding space environment.
