Rock Sole
Rock sole (Lepidopsetta bilineata) is a species of flatfish belonging to the family Pleuronectidae. It is native to the northern Pacific Ocean, particularly in the coastal waters of North America and Asia.
Pronunciation
Rock sole is pronounced as /ˈrɒk ˈsoʊl/.
Etymology
The term "rock sole" is derived from the fish's habit of living near rocky areas and its flat, sole-like shape. The scientific name Lepidopsetta bilineata is derived from Greek lepidos (scale), opsetta (a kind of fish), and Latin bilineata (two-lined), referring to the two lateral lines on each side of the body.
Description
Rock sole are characterized by their flat bodies, small heads, and eyes located on the right side of their body. They have a brownish color on their eyed side and a white color on their blind side. The maximum length of a rock sole can reach up to 60 cm.
Habitat and Distribution
Rock sole inhabit the sandy or muddy bottoms of the coastal waters, often near rocky areas. They are found in the northern Pacific Ocean, from the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands to California in North America, and from the Sea of Okhotsk and Kamchatka Peninsula to Korea in Asia.
Diet
Rock sole feed on a variety of organisms including polychaetes, crustaceans, and bivalves.
