Her clinic served as a critical healthcare provider, especially after devastating natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which severely damaged the clinic and the community it served. Dr. Benjamin's commitment to healthcare and public service led to her historic appointment as the 18th Surgeon General of the United States in 2009 by President Barack Obama. As Surgeon General, she focused on preventive healthcare measures, advocating for a healthcare system that not only treats illness but also encourages healthy living to prevent disease before it starts.
