Reddish
Reddish is a district in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, in Greater Manchester, England. It is located about 2 miles north of Stockport town centre and 4.6 miles southeast of Manchester. The area is primarily residential with a mix of housing from the Victorian era alongside more modern developments. Historically part of Lancashire, Reddish grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution as a result of its textile factories and mills, which formed a significant part of the area's economy.
History
The name 'Reddish' is believed to derive from either the Old English 'read' meaning 'red' or 'reedy', referring to the reeds that grew in the wetlands of the area. The district's history is closely linked with the industrial activities of the 19th century, particularly the cotton industry. The construction of the Stockport Branch Canal in 1795 facilitated the transportation of goods and raw materials, contributing to the area's industrial growth. Notable mills, such as Houldsworth Mill, played a crucial role in the local economy. Post-industrial decline saw a shift in Reddish's economic base, with former industrial sites being redeveloped for residential and commercial use.
Geography
Reddish is bordered by the districts of Heaton Chapel to the west, Levenshulme and Gorton to the north, the Tame Valley to the east, and Stockport to the south. The area is characterized by its urban setting, with several parks and green spaces providing a contrast, including Reddish Vale which is a popular spot for recreation and wildlife.
