Professor Raphael Mechoulam

Raphael Mechoulam (born 5 November 1930) is an Israeli organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is best known for his pioneering research in the field of cannabinoids.

Early Life and Education

Raphael Mechoulam was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. He immigrated to Israel in 1949. Mechoulam received his M.Sc. in biochemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1952 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1958.

Career

Mechoulam began his career at the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he conducted research on the chemistry of natural products. In 1966, he joined the faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he has worked ever since.

Research on Cannabinoids

Raphael Mechoulam is renowned for his groundbreaking work on the chemistry and pharmacology of cannabinoids. In the early 1960s, he and his colleagues isolated and synthesized tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of cannabis. This discovery was pivotal in advancing the scientific understanding of cannabis and its effects on the human body.

Mechoulam's research also led to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, a complex cell-signaling system that plays a crucial role in regulating a range of physiological processes, including mood, memory, and pain sensation. His work has had significant implications for the development of medical cannabis and cannabinoid-based therapies.

Awards and Honors

Throughout his career, Raphael Mechoulam has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science, including the Israel Prize in Exact Sciences - Chemistry in 2000, and the EMET Prize for Art, Science and Culture in 2012.

Personal Life

Raphael Mechoulam is married and has three children. He continues to reside in Jerusalem, Israel.
