Pyrantel is an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections. It is particularly effective against hookworms and roundworms. Pyrantel works by paralyzing the worms, which are then expelled from the body through the feces.
Mechanism of Action[edit]
Pyrantel acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent in susceptible parasites. It causes a depolarizing neuromuscular blockade, leading to spastic paralysis of the worm. This paralysis allows the host's natural peristaltic action to expel the worm from the gastrointestinal tract.
