Psilocybe cyanescens is a species of psychedelic mushroom that contains the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin. It is commonly known as the "wavy cap" due to the distinctive undulating shape of its cap. This species is part of the family Hymenogastraceae.

Description

Psilocybe cyanescens has a distinctive appearance, characterized by its caramel-colored cap that becomes wavy as it matures. The cap typically measures between 2 to 5 cm in diameter. The gills are adnate to adnexed, and they start out pale brown, becoming dark purple-brown as the spores mature. The stipe, or stem, is usually 2 to 8 cm long and 0.2 to 0.5 cm thick, often with a white to yellowish color that bruises blue when handled.

Habitat and Distribution

Psilocybe cyanescens is commonly found in temperate regions, particularly in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and parts of Europe. It typically grows in wood chips, mulch, and other lignin-rich substrates, often in landscaped areas such as gardens and parks.

Psychoactive Properties

The primary active compounds in Psilocybe cyanescens are psilocybin and psilocin, which are known for their hallucinogenic effects. These compounds interact with the serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perceptions, mood changes, and visual hallucinations. The potency of Psilocybe cyanescens is considered to be high compared to other species of psychedelic mushrooms.

Legal Status

The legal status of Psilocybe cyanescens varies by country and region. In many places, the possession, sale, and cultivation of this mushroom are illegal due to its psychoactive properties. However, some regions have decriminalized or legalized its use for medical or recreational purposes.

Related Species

Psilocybe cyanescens is closely related to other species in the genus Psilocybe, such as Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe semilanceata, and Psilocybe azurescens. These species also contain psilocybin and psilocin and are known for their psychoactive effects.
