Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation (pronunciation: /priːˌmeɪtʃər ɪˌdʒækjʊˈleɪʃən/) is a common sexual dysfunction in which ejaculation happens sooner than a man or his partner would like during sexual activity.

Etymology

The term "premature ejaculation" comes from the Latin praematurus (meaning 'before maturity') and ejaculatio (meaning 'throwing out').

Definition

Premature ejaculation is characterized by a lack of voluntary control over ejaculation that interferes with optimal sexual or psychological well-being in either partner.

Types

There are two types of premature ejaculation: primary (or lifelong) premature ejaculation and secondary (or acquired) premature ejaculation. Primary premature ejaculation occurs all or nearly all of the time beginning with your first sexual encounters. Secondary premature ejaculation has the same symptoms but develops after you've had previous sexual experiences without ejaculatory problems.

Causes

The exact cause of premature ejaculation isn't known. While it was once thought to be only psychological, doctors now know premature ejaculation involves a complex interaction of psychological and biological factors.

Treatment

Treatment for premature ejaculation often involves a combination of sexual therapy, psychotherapy, and medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or topical anesthetics.
