Postdoctoral (pronunciation: /ˌpoʊstˈdɒktərəl/), often abbreviated as postdoc, refers to an individual who has completed a Doctoral degree and is engaged in a temporary period of mentored research and/or scholarly training for the purpose of acquiring the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of his or her choosing.

The term "postdoctoral" originates from the Latin words "post" meaning "after" and "doctor" meaning "teacher". The term is used to describe a person who has completed their doctoral studies and is now conducting research in a specialized field.
