Pennsylvania Route 309 (PA 309) is a major state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The route runs for approximately 134 miles (216 km) from U.S. Route 1 (US 1) in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, to Interstate 81 (I-81) in Hazleton, Luzerne County.

Route description

PA 309 begins at an interchange with US 1 in Cheltenham Township, just north of the Philadelphia city line. The route heads north as a four-lane divided highway known as the Cheltenham Avenue and then transitions into the Fort Washington Expressway as it continues through Montgomery County.

The highway passes through several suburban communities, including Fort Washington, where it intersects with PA 73. Continuing north, PA 309 intersects with PA 63 in Montgomeryville and PA 113 in Souderton.

As PA 309 enters Bucks County, it becomes a two-lane road and passes through the boroughs of Quakertown and Coopersburg. The route then enters Lehigh County and becomes a freeway known as the Lehigh Valley Thruway as it approaches the city of Allentown.

In Allentown, PA 309 intersects with I-78 and US 22, providing access to the Lehigh Valley International Airport. The route continues north through Schnecksville and New Tripoli before entering Carbon County.

In Carbon County, PA 309 passes through the borough of Tamaqua and continues into Schuylkill County, where it intersects with PA 54 in Hometown. The route then enters Luzerne County and reaches its northern terminus at an interchange with I-81 in Hazleton.

History

PA 309 was designated in 1928, originally running from Philadelphia to Wilkes-Barre. Over the years, the route has undergone several realignments and improvements, including the construction of the Fort Washington Expressway and the Lehigh Valley Thruway.
