Patrick Soon-Shiong

Patrick Soon-Shiong (pronunciation: /ˈsuːn ʃɒŋ/) is a South African-American transplant surgeon, biomedical scientist, and billionaire businessman. He is the inventor of Abraxane, a drug used to treat cancer, which led to the foundation of two NASDAQ-listed companies, American Pharmaceutical Partners and Abraxis BioScience.

Etymology

The name "Patrick" is of Latin origin, derived from the Latin name "Patricius" meaning "nobleman". "Soon-Shiong" is of Chinese origin, with "Soon" meaning "smooth" and "Shiong" meaning "bear" in English.

Early Life and Education

Soon-Shiong was born on July 29, 1952, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to Chinese immigrant parents. He completed his medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand, and later moved to the United States where he completed a surgical residency at the University of British Columbia.

Career

In 1991, Soon-Shiong performed the world's first full-pancreas transplant at the University of California, Los Angeles. He also developed and patented the drug Abraxane, which is used in the treatment of breast, lung, and pancreatic cancers.

In 1997, he founded American Pharmaceutical Partners, a company that was later acquired by Fresenius SE. In 2007, he founded Abraxis BioScience, a biotechnology company that was later acquired by Celgene.

In 2010, Soon-Shiong founded NantWorks, a network of healthcare and technology startups. He is also the owner of the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune.
