PatientsLikeMe

PatientsLikeMe (/ˈpeɪʃənts laɪk mi:/) is an online service that allows patients to connect with others who have the same disease or condition and track and share their own experiences. The company was founded in 2004 by three MIT engineers: brothers Ben and Jamie, and their friend Jeff. The name "PatientsLikeMe" is derived from the founders' desire to create a community for patients, by patients.

History

PatientsLikeMe was inspired by the Heywood brothers' experiences with their brother Stephen, who was diagnosed with ALS in 1998. The site was launched in 2006 and has since grown to include communities for more than 2,500 conditions.

Function

The site also provides tools for users to track their health over time and to contribute to research by sharing their data. The platform is designed to help patients make more informed decisions about their health and to provide researchers with real-world, patient-reported data.

Impact

PatientsLikeMe has been recognized for its innovative approach to patient care and research. The platform has been used in numerous research studies and has contributed to advancements in various fields of medicine.
