Outline of Clinical Research

Clinical research (pronounced: klin-i-kal ri-surch) is a branch of healthcare science that determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. These may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relieving symptoms of a disease.

Etymology

The term "clinical" is derived from the Greek word "klinikos", which means "bed". This refers to the practice of medicine at the bedside of a patient. "Research" comes from the Old French "recercher", which means "to seek out or search closely".
