Nueva Ecija is a landlocked province located in the Central Luzon region of the Philippines. It is known for its rich agricultural lands and is often referred to as the "Rice Granary of the Philippines." The province is bordered by Pangasinan to the north, Tarlac to the west, Pampanga to the southwest, Bulacan to the south, Aurora to the east, and Nueva Vizcaya to the northeast.
History
Nueva Ecija was established as a military comandancia in 1705, named after the city of Écija in Seville, Spain. It became a province in 1848. The province played a significant role during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War.
Geography
Nueva Ecija covers a total area of 5,751.33 square kilometers. The province is characterized by its vast plains, which are ideal for agriculture. The Sierra Madre mountain range lies to the east, providing a natural boundary with the province of Aurora.
Economy
The economy of Nueva Ecija is predominantly agricultural. It is one of the top producers of rice in the country, contributing significantly to the national rice supply. Other major crops include corn, onion, garlic, and mango. The province is also known for its livestock and poultry industries.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, Nueva Ecija has a population of 2,310,134 people. The province is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, with Tagalog being the predominant language spoken.
Education
Nueva Ecija is home to several higher education institutions, including the Central Luzon State University in Science City of Muñoz, which is known for its programs in agriculture and related fields.
Tourism
The province offers various tourist attractions, including the Minalungao National Park, the historic Barasoain Church, and the scenic Pantabangan Dam.
