Novartis (/noʊˈvɑːrtɪs/) is a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company based in Basel, Switzerland. It is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.
Etymology
The name "Novartis" was coined in 1996 when the company was formed by the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. The name is derived from the Latin words "novae artes" which mean "new skills".
History
Novartis was created in 1996 through a merger of two Swiss companies, Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. Both of these companies have a long history of innovation and research, with Sandoz being the first company to produce synthetic dyes in the 19th century and Ciba-Geigy being a leader in the development of new drugs.
