North Carolina wine
North Carolina wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The state has a rich history of wine production that dates back to the colonial period. Today, North Carolina ranks tenth in both grape and wine production in the United States.
History
The history of North Carolina wine stretches back to the colonial period in the 17th century, when British explorers discovered a species of grape known as Vitis vinifera, which was used for winemaking. The Scuppernong grape was discovered on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, leading to the development of the Muscadine wine, a sweet wine that is still produced in the state today.
Wine Regions
North Carolina has four federally designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs): Yadkin Valley, Swan Creek, Haw River Valley, and Upper Hiwassee Highlands. Each of these regions has a unique climate and geography that contributes to the distinct flavors of their wines.
Yadkin Valley
The Yadkin Valley is the oldest AVA in North Carolina, established in 2003. It is home to the majority of the state's wineries and vineyards, and is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay wines.
Swan Creek
Swan Creek, established in 2008, is a smaller AVA within the Yadkin Valley. It is known for its unique microclimate, which is ideal for growing European-style grapes.
Haw River Valley
The Haw River Valley AVA was established in 2009. It is known for its diverse range of grape varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and Syrah.
Upper Hiwassee Highlands
The Upper Hiwassee Highlands AVA, established in 2014, spans the border between North Carolina and Georgia. It is known for its high-altitude vineyards and cool climate, which is ideal for growing a variety of grapes.
Wine Styles
North Carolina produces a wide range of wine styles, including red, white, rosé, and dessert wines. The state is perhaps best known for its sweet Muscadine wines, but also produces a variety of European-style wines.
