Norgesterone (pronunciation: nor-jes-ter-own) is a progestin medication which is used in birth control pills and in menopausal hormone therapy. It is not available for medical use on its own, but rather is contained in some combined oral contraceptives and in some menopausal hormone therapy medications.

Etymology

The term "Norgesterone" is derived from the words "nor", a prefix used in organic chemistry to denote a molecule from which one carbon atom has been removed, and "gest", from the Latin "gestare", meaning to bear or carry, referring to its role in pregnancy.

Pharmacology

Norgesterone is a synthetic progestogen, or an artificial form of the naturally occurring female hormone progesterone. It works by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucus, and changing the lining of the uterus.
