nocebo - (pronounced) (noh-SEE-boh) A harmless substance or treatment that can cause harmful side effects or worsening of symptoms because the patient thinks or believes they may occur or expect them to occur. For example, in a clinical trial, patients who are not given active treatment but are told what side effects active treatment may cause may experience the same side effects as patients receiving active treatment simply because they expect them to occur
