Etymology
The genus name Nephelium is derived from the Greek word 'nephelē', meaning 'cloud', possibly referring to the tree's height. The species name xerospermoides is derived from the Greek words 'xeros' meaning 'dry' and 'sperma' meaning 'seed', and 'oides' meaning 'resembling', referring to the dry seeds of the fruit.
Description
Nephelium xerospermoides is a medium-sized tree that can reach up to 15 meters in height. The leaves are pinnate, with 2-4 pairs of leaflets. The flowers are small and white, arranged in panicles. The fruit is a capsule, containing dry seeds.
Habitat and Distribution
Nephelium xerospermoides is found in lowland rainforests and montane forests in Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. It prefers well-drained soils and areas with high rainfall.
Conservation Status
Nephelium xerospermoides is currently not listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, like many tropical tree species, it may be threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation.
