Neonatal death

Neonatal death (/niːəˈneɪtəl dɛθ/) refers to the death of a newborn within the first 28 days of life. This period is further subdivided into early (0–7 days) and late (8–28 days) neonatal periods.

Etymology

The term "neonatal" comes from the Greek words "neos" meaning new, and "natal" meaning relating to birth or origin.

Causes

Neonatal death can be caused by a variety of factors, including premature birth, birth defects, infection, birth asphyxia, and complications during childbirth.

Premature birth

Premature birth is a significant cause of neonatal death. Babies born before 37 weeks of gestation are considered premature and are at a higher risk of health complications and death.

Birth defects

Birth defects, also known as congenital anomalies, can lead to neonatal death. These defects can be structural or functional abnormalities present at birth that cause physical disability or illness.

Infection

Infections, such as sepsis, meningitis, and pneumonia, can also lead to neonatal death. These infections can be acquired during birth or in the neonatal period.

Birth asphyxia

Birth asphyxia is a condition where a baby doesn't receive enough oxygen before, during, or just after birth. This can lead to brain damage and death.

Complications during childbirth

Complications during childbirth, such as obstructed labor, can also lead to neonatal death.

Prevention

Prevention of neonatal death involves a combination of high-quality prenatal care, safe childbirth practices, and effective care for newborns. This includes early detection and management of complications during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as appropriate care for premature babies and those with birth defects.
