Nemosis (pronounced: ne-mo-sis) is a biological process that involves the non-apoptotic death of fibroblasts, a type of cell that synthesizes the extracellular matrix and collagen. This process is often triggered by mechanical stress or strain.
Etymology
The term "Nemosis" is derived from the Greek word "nemein", which means "to distribute". This is in reference to the distribution of cellular components during the process of nemosis.
Process
During nemosis, fibroblasts undergo a series of changes that lead to their death. These changes include the formation of nemosis fibroblast clusters (NFCs), which are groups of fibroblasts that have been affected by nemosis. NFCs are characterized by their increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, which can contribute to the progression of various diseases, including cancer and fibrosis.
