National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles
The National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) is a series of surveys conducted in the United Kingdom that investigate the sexual behaviour, attitudes, and lifestyles of the British population. These surveys are among the largest and most comprehensive studies of sexual behaviour in the world.
History
The first Natsal survey was conducted in 1990-1991, followed by subsequent surveys in 1999-2001 and 2010-2012. The surveys were initiated in response to the emerging HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the aim of understanding sexual behaviour patterns that could influence the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Methodology
Natsal surveys employ a combination of face-to-face interviews and self-completed questionnaires to gather data. The surveys are designed to be representative of the British population aged 16-74 years. Participants are selected using a stratified random sampling method to ensure diversity in terms of age, gender, and geographic location.
Key Findings
The Natsal surveys have provided valuable insights into the sexual health and behaviour of the UK population. Key findings include:
- Changes in the age of first sexual intercourse over time.
- Variations in the number of sexual partners by age and gender.
- Trends in contraceptive use and preferences.
- Attitudes towards homosexuality, bisexuality, and other sexual orientations.
- Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and related health outcomes.
Impact
The data from Natsal surveys have been instrumental in shaping public health policy and sexual health education in the UK. The findings have informed government strategies on sexual health, contributed to the development of educational materials, and supported research on sexual behaviour and health.
Future Directions
The Natsal team continues to plan future surveys to monitor changes in sexual behaviour and attitudes. These surveys aim to address emerging issues such as the impact of digital technology on sexual relationships and the role of social media in shaping sexual norms.
