Nadine Caron
Canadian surgeon and academic
Nadine Rena Caron is a Canadian surgeon, public health advocate, and academic known for her contributions to Indigenous health and surgical oncology. She is recognized as the first Indigenous woman to graduate from the University of British Columbia's medical school and has been a prominent figure in advocating for equitable healthcare access for Indigenous communities.
Early Life and Education
Nadine Caron was born in Kamloops, British Columbia, and is of Ojibwe descent. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Simon Fraser University, where she excelled in academics and athletics, playing on the university's basketball team. Caron then attended the University of British Columbia (UBC) for her medical degree, graduating as the top student in her class. She furthered her education with a Master's degree in Public Health from Harvard University.
Medical Career
Caron completed her residency in General Surgery at UBC, where she developed a keen interest in surgical oncology. She became the first Indigenous woman to become a general surgeon in Canada. Her clinical practice is based at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, British Columbia.
Academic Contributions
In addition to her clinical work, Caron is a faculty member at UBC, where she is involved in teaching and mentoring medical students. She has been instrumental in developing curricula that address the healthcare needs of Indigenous populations. Caron is also a co-director of the UBC Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health, where she works on initiatives to improve health outcomes for Indigenous communities.

Caron is a vocal advocate for Indigenous health equity. She has worked on numerous projects aimed at reducing health disparities and improving access to healthcare services for Indigenous peoples.
