NOGI Awards

NOGI Awards are prestigious awards given annually by the Underwater Society of America (USOA) to individuals who have made significant contributions to the fields of art, science, sports/education, and distinguished service in the underwater world. The NOGI Awards are considered the highest honor in the underwater community, often referred to as the "Oscars of the Ocean".

History

The NOGI Awards were first presented in 1960 by the New Orleans Grand Isle (NOGI) Scuba Diving Club. The awards were initially given to recognize achievements in the sport of scuba diving. Over the years, the scope of the awards has expanded to include contributions to underwater art, science, sports/education, and distinguished service.

The NOGI Awards are presented in four categories:

• Art: This category recognizes individuals who have used their artistic abilities to promote and enhance the underwater world. This can include photography, film making, painting, and other forms of artistic expression.

• Science: This category honors individuals who have made significant scientific contributions to our understanding of the underwater world. This can include research in marine biology, oceanography, marine archaeology, and other scientific disciplines.

• Sports/Education: This category acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to the promotion and education of underwater sports, particularly scuba diving.

• Distinguished Service: This category is for individuals who have made significant contributions to the underwater community through their service, often over a long period of time.

Notable Recipients

Over the years, many notable individuals have received NOGI Awards, including Jacques Cousteau, Sylvia Earle, and James Cameron, among others.
