Montevideo (pronunciation: /ˌmɒntɪvɪˈdeɪoʊ, -ˈviː-/) is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. While not a medical term, it is the location of several important medical institutions and research centers.
Etymology
The name Montevideo comes from the Spanish "Monte vide eu" which translates to "I see a mountain". The name is believed to have been given by the Spanish explorer Fernando de Magallanes who saw the hill, now known as Cerro de Montevideo, from the sea.
