Mont Park Asylum

Mont Park Asylum (pronounced: /mɒnt pɑːk əˈsaɪləm/) was a psychiatric hospital located in Bundoora, Victoria, Australia. It was operational from 1912 to 1999.

Etymology

The name "Mont Park" is derived from the location of the asylum, which is situated in the suburb of Mont Park in Bundoora, Victoria, Australia.

History

Mont Park Asylum was established in 1912 as a farm colony for male patients from Yarra Bend Asylum. It was designed to be self-sufficient, with its own piggery, orchard, and vegetable gardens. The asylum was expanded over the years to include a number of other facilities, including the Chronic Wards, Acute Wards, and Larundel Psychiatric Hospital.

Facilities

The asylum consisted of several buildings, each serving a different purpose. The main building housed the administrative offices and patient wards. Other buildings included the Nurses' Home, the Recreation Hall, and the Chapel. The grounds also included a large farm and several gardens.

Treatment

Patients at Mont Park Asylum were treated using a variety of methods, including psychotherapy, occupational therapy, and medication. The asylum was known for its progressive approach to mental health care, with a focus on rehabilitation and social integration.

Closure

The asylum was closed in 1999 as part of the Victorian Government's deinstitutionalisation policy. The buildings and grounds have since been redeveloped into residential and community facilities.
