Michel Roux was a French-born chef and restaurateur who was instrumental in the development of modern British cuisine. He was born on 19 April 1941 in Charolles, Saône-et-Loire, France and passed away on 11 March 2020.

Early Life

Michel Roux was born into a family of butchers and charcutiers. He began his culinary career at the age of 14 as an apprentice patissier in Bellegarde, a small town in his native region of Saône-et-Loire.

Career

In 1967, Michel Roux and his brother Albert Roux opened Le Gavroche, the first restaurant in the UK to gain three Michelin stars. The brothers later opened The Waterside Inn in Bray in 1972, which also gained three Michelin stars. Michel Roux was known for his dedication to the highest standards of cooking and service.

Legacy

Michel Roux's influence on British cuisine cannot be overstated. He trained many of the UK's top chefs, including Gordon Ramsay, Marco Pierre White, and Pierre Koffmann. His restaurants, Le Gavroche and The Waterside Inn, continue to be among the most respected in the world.

Personal Life

Michel Roux was married to Robyn Roux and they had two children, Alain Roux and Christine Roux. Alain Roux is now the chef-patron of The Waterside Inn, continuing his father's legacy.

Death

Michel Roux passed away on 11 March 2020, at the age of 78. His death was a significant loss to the culinary world.
