Michael Dukakis
Michael Stanley Dukakis (born November 3, 1933) is an American politician who served as the 65th Governor of Massachusetts from 1975 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991. He was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in the 1988 election, losing to the Republican candidate, George H. W. Bush.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Michael Dukakis was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Greek immigrant parents. He attended Swarthmore College, where he graduated with a degree in political science. He later earned his law degree from Harvard Law School.
Political Career[edit]
Massachusetts House of Representatives[edit]
Dukakis began his political career in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving from 1963 to 1971. During his tenure, he focused on issues such as healthcare, education, and transportation.
Governor of Massachusetts[edit]
Dukakis was first elected as the Governor of Massachusetts in 1974. His first term was marked by efforts to reform the state's welfare system and improve public transportation. He lost his re-election bid in 1978 but was re-elected in 1982. During his second and third terms, he focused on economic development, environmental issues, and healthcare reform.
1988 Presidential Campaign[edit]
In 1988, Dukakis won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. His campaign emphasized competence and experience, but he faced criticism for his handling of crime and defense issues. He ultimately lost the election to George H. W. Bush.
Later Career and Legacy[edit]
After his political career, Dukakis became a professor of political science at Northeastern University and a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He remains active in public policy discussions and continues to advocate for issues such as healthcare reform and public transportation.
Personal Life[edit]
Dukakis is married to Kitty Dukakis, and they have three children. He is known for his commitment to public service and his efforts to improve the quality of life for Massachusetts residents.
