The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), also known simply as The G, is a major sports stadium located in Yarra Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere and the 11th largest globally, with a seating capacity of approximately 100,000. The MCG is managed by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC).
History
The MCG was established in 1853 and has undergone numerous renovations and expansions since its inception. It has hosted a variety of significant sporting events, including cricket, Australian rules football, and the Olympic Games. The ground is renowned for its rich history and cultural significance in Australian sport.
Cricket
The MCG is the home of the Victoria cricket team and the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. It is also a prominent venue for international cricket, hosting Test matches, ODIs, and T20Is. The annual Boxing Day Test match, held on December 26, is one of the most anticipated events in the cricket calendar.
Australian Rules Football
The MCG is the principal venue for Australian Football League (AFL) matches, including the AFL Grand Final, which is held annually in September. The ground is the home stadium for several AFL teams, including the Collingwood Football Club, Richmond Football Club, Melbourne Football Club, and Hawthorn Football Club.
Olympic Games
The MCG was the main stadium for the 1956 Summer Olympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the athletics events. It also served as a venue for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
