The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is a private medical school and graduate school of sciences located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The pronunciation is /ˈmɛdɪkəl ˈkɒlɪdʒ ɒv ˈwɪskɒnsɪn/.

Etymology

The name "Medical College of Wisconsin" is derived from its location and its primary focus on medical education and research. The term "college" is derived from the Latin word collegium, meaning "community", "society", or "guild". The term "Wisconsin" is derived from the Algonquin word Meskonsing, meaning "it lies red", a reference to the red sandstone formations of the Wisconsin River.

History

The Medical College of Wisconsin was founded in 1893 as the Milwaukee Medical College. In 1913, it merged with the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons to form the Marquette University School of Medicine. In 1967, it became a freestanding institution and adopted its current name.

MCW offers a variety of educational programs, including Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master's programs, and postdoctoral fellowship programs. It also offers a number of dual degree programs, such as the MD/PhD and MD/Master of Public Health (MPH) programs.
