Media (pronunciation: /ˈmiːdiə/; etymology: from Latin medium, meaning "middle") is a term used to refer to the various means of communication that reach or influence people widely, such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet.

Definition

Media is the plural form of medium, which in the context of communication, refers to the tool or substance used to transmit and store information. The term "media" is often used to refer collectively to all forms of mass communication.

Types of Media

There are several types of media, including:

  • Print Media: This includes newspapers, magazines, brochures, newsletters, books and other printed materials intended for mass distribution.
  • Broadcast Media: This includes television and radio. Broadcast media are, traditionally, the most commonly used media for reaching large numbers of people.
  • Digital Media: This includes media that work on digital codes, like computers, smartphones, digital billboards, etc. The Internet is the most popular form of digital media.
  • Social Media: This includes digital media that allow people to interact, network, and share information online, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
  • Outdoor Media: This includes billboards, signs, placards placed inside and outside commercial buildings/objects like shops/buses, flying billboards (signs in tow of airplanes), blimps, skywriting in outdoor advertising.
