McMurray Test

The McMurray Test (pronounced: mick-mur-ray test) is a clinical examination procedure used to evaluate the integrity of the meniscus in the knee joint. It is named after the British orthopedic surgeon, Thomas Porter McMurray, who first described the test in 1942.

Etymology

The McMurray Test is named after its inventor, Thomas Porter McMurray, a British orthopedic surgeon. The term "test" is derived from the Latin word 'testum', meaning 'the lid of an earthen vessel, piece of pottery'.

Procedure

The McMurray Test is performed with the patient lying supine. The examiner holds the patient's heel with one hand and the knee with the other hand. The knee is then flexed and the foot is rotated to put stress on one meniscus at a time. A positive McMurray Test is indicated by a painful click or pop along the joint line of the knee as it is extended and the foot is rotated.
