Max Thorek (1880%E2%80%931960)

Max Thorek (March 10, 1880 – January 25, 1960) was a Hungarian-American surgeon and medical educator. He is best known for founding the International College of Surgeons (ICS) and for his contributions to the field of surgery.

Early Life and Education

Max Thorek was born in Hungary on March 10, 1880. He emigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. Thorek completed his medical education at the Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, where he earned his medical degree.

Career

Thorek began his medical career as a general surgeon in Chicago. He quickly gained a reputation for his surgical skills and innovative techniques. In 1910, he founded the American Hospital of Chicago, which later became known as the Thorek Memorial Hospital in his honor.

International College of Surgeons

In 1935, Thorek founded the International College of Surgeons (ICS), an organization aimed at promoting the exchange of surgical knowledge and techniques across different countries. The ICS has since grown into a global organization with members from over 100 countries.

Contributions to Surgery

Thorek made significant contributions to the field of surgery, particularly in the areas of plastic surgery and abdominal surgery. He authored several influential books and articles, including "Surgical Errors and Safeguards" and "Modern Surgical Technique."

Personal Life

Max Thorek was married and had two children. He was also an avid photographer and published a book of his photographs titled "A Surgeon's World."

Death and Legacy

Max Thorek passed away on January 25, 1960. His legacy continues through the institutions he founded and the advancements he made in the field of surgery. The Thorek Memorial Hospital and the International College of Surgeons remain active and continue to honor his contributions to medicine.
