Maseru

Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho. It is located on the western border of Lesotho, adjacent to the Free State province of South Africa. The city is situated on the Caledon River, which forms the border between Lesotho and South Africa.
History[edit]
Maseru was established as a small police camp and administrative center in 1869, following the conclusion of the Gun War and the signing of the Treaty of Aliwal North. The city became the capital of the British Protectorate of Basutoland, which later became the independent nation of Lesotho in 1966.
Geography[edit]
Maseru is located at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters (5,200 feet) above sea level. The city covers an area of about 138 square kilometers (53 square miles). The Caledon River runs along the western edge of the city, providing a natural border with South Africa.
Climate[edit]
Maseru has a temperate climate with hot summers and cool winters. The city experiences a semi-arid climate with most of its rainfall occurring during the summer months from October to April.
Economy[edit]
Maseru is the economic hub of Lesotho, with a significant portion of the country's manufacturing and commerce centered in the city. The city is home to several textile and apparel factories, which are major contributors to Lesotho's economy. Additionally, Maseru serves as a key trading center due to its proximity to South Africa.
Transportation[edit]
Maseru is well-connected by road and air. The city is served by the Moshoeshoe I International Airport, which provides domestic and international flights. Major roads connect Maseru to other parts of Lesotho and to South Africa, facilitating trade and travel.
Education[edit]
Maseru is home to several educational institutions, including the National University of Lesotho, which is located in the nearby town of Roma. The city also has numerous primary and secondary schools, as well as vocational training centers.
Culture[edit]
Maseru is a cultural center for Lesotho, hosting various events and festivals throughout the year. The city is known for its traditional Basotho culture, which is reflected in its music, dance, and art. The Basotho Hat (Mokorotlo) is a symbol of the nation's cultural heritage and is often seen in Maseru.
