Mary T. Bassett
Mary T. Bassett (pronunciation: /ˈmɛəri ˈtiː ˈbæsɪt/) is a prominent figure in the field of public health.
Etymology
The name "Mary" is of Hebrew origin, meaning "wished-for child", while "Bassett" is of French and English origin, referring to a "little person". The middle initial "T." has not been publicly disclosed by Bassett.
Career
Bassett has dedicated her career to advancing health equity, and she has worked in various capacities to improve public health outcomes in the United States and abroad. She served as the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from 2014 to 2018, where she worked to address structural and racial inequities in health.
Bassett is currently the Director of the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University, and she is also the FXB Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Education
Bassett received her B.A. in History and Science from Harvard University and her M.D. from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She also holds an M.P.H. from the University of Washington.
