Marinette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 41,872. The county seat is Marinette. The county was created in 1879 and organized in 1885.

History

Marinette County was named after Marinette, the county seat, which in turn was named after a French-Indian woman, Queen Marinette, who was influential in the area during the early 19th century. The county has a rich history of logging and paper milling, which were the primary industries in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,550 square miles (4,000 km²), of which 1,399 square miles (3,620 km²) is land and 151 square miles (390 km²) (9.7%) is water. The county is part of the Nicolet National Forest and features numerous lakes, rivers, and streams, making it a popular destination for outdoor recreation.

The economy of Marinette County is diverse, with significant contributions from manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The county is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Marinette Marine, which builds ships for the United States Navy.

Education

Marinette County is served by several school districts, including the Marinette School District and the Peshtigo School District. Higher education is available at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Marinette Campus.
