Marathi (मराठी)
Marathi (IPA: məˈrɑːti; /məˈrɑːθi/), is an Indo-Aryan language predominantly spoken by around 83.1 million Marathi people of Maharashtra, India. It is the official language and co-official language in the Maharashtra and Goa states of Western India, respectively, and is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India.

Etymology
The term Marathi is derived from the name of the region of its origin, "Maharashtra". The term "Maratha" is used in three overlapping senses: within the Marathi-speaking region it describes the dominant Maratha caste; historically, the term describes the Maratha Empire founded by Shivaji in the 17th century; in contemporary usage it describes the Marathi-speaking people of Maharashtra.
