Macau (pronounced: məˈkaʊ), also spelled Macao, is a region on the south coast of China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. It was a Portuguese territory until 1999 and reflects a mix of cultural influences.

Etymology

The name "Macau" is thought to be derived from the A-Ma Temple, a temple built in 1488 dedicated to Matsu - the goddess of seafarers and fishermen. In Portuguese, the name is spelled "Macau", which is also used in English.
