Pearl River Delta
Pearl River Delta (pronunciation: /ˈpɜːrl ˈrɪvər ˈdɛltə/), also known as Zhujiang Delta or Zhu Delta, is an area in the People's Republic of China consisting of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing.
Etymology
The name "Pearl River" is said to derive from a pearl-colored shellfish that lies at the bottom of the river in the section that flows through the city of Guangzhou.
Geography
The Pearl River Delta is described as a low-lying area surrounding the Pearl River estuary, where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea. It is one of the most densely urbanized regions in the world and is often considered an emerging megacity.
Economy
The Pearl River Delta has become one of the leading economic regions and a major manufacturing center of China and the world.
