  • Type VII Collagen is the main component of anchoring fibrils that secure the basement membrane to the underlying dermis. Autoantibodies against type VII collagen are characteristic of Epidermolysis Bullosa Acquisita (EBA), a rare form of pemphigoid.

Diagnosis and Clinical Significance

The identification of specific autoantibodies in a patient's serum is crucial for diagnosing pemphigoid diseases. Techniques such as direct and indirect immunofluorescence, ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), and immunoblotting are commonly used to detect and quantify these autoantibodies.
