Progestogens
Progestogens (pronounced: pro-jes-to-gens), also known as progestins or gestagens, are a type of Steroid hormone that bind to and activate the Progesterone receptor. The term "progestogen" is derived from the Latin "pro" meaning "for" and "gestare" meaning "to carry", referring to its role in maintaining pregnancy.
Types of Progestogens
Progestogens can be classified into two main groups: Natural Progesterone and Synthetic Progestogens.
- Natural Progesterone is a naturally occurring progestogen hormone produced by the Corpus luteum in the Ovary and the Placenta during pregnancy.
- Synthetic Progestogens are man-made hormones that mimic the effects of natural progesterone. They are used in a variety of contraceptive methods, Hormone replacement therapy, and to treat a variety of gynecological conditions.
