List of Highly Toxic Gases

A highly toxic gas is a type of gas that can cause severe harm or death when inhaled, ingested, or comes into contact with the skin. These gases are often used in industrial processes, but can also be found in nature.

Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN)

Hydrogen Cyanide (/ˈhaɪdrədʒən saɪˈænaɪd/) is a colorless, extremely poisonous, and flammable liquid that boils slightly above room temperature. It is used commercially for fumigation, electroplating, and as a chemical intermediate. It has a bitter almond odor.

Phosgene (COCl2)

Phosgene (/ˈfɒsdiːn/) is a valued industrial building block, especially for the preparation of urethanes and polycarbonate plastics. However, it is a highly toxic gas that was used as a chemical weapon during World War I where it was responsible for about 85% of the 100,000 deaths caused by chemical weapons.

Chlorine (Cl2)

Chlorine (/ˈklɔːriːn/) is a yellow-green gas under standard conditions, where it forms diatomic molecules. It has a choking smell, and inhalation of it can cause difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and other respiratory problems.

Sulfur Mustard (C4H8Cl2S)

Sulfur Mustard (/ˈsʌlfər ˈmʌstərd/), commonly known as mustard gas, is a cytotoxic and vesicant chemical warfare agent with the ability to form large blisters on exposed skin and in the lungs.

Sarin (C4H10FO2P)

Sarin (/ˈsærɪn/) is a synthetic compound, which is used as a nerve gas. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, and can cause death in minutes.
