The United States district courts are the general trial courts of the United States federal judiciary. Each district court has at least one United States District Judge, appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate for a life term. District courts handle both civil and criminal cases.

The United States territorial courts are courts established in territories of the United States. These courts have jurisdiction over federal cases within their respective territories.

The United States is divided into 94 judicial districts, each with a district court. These courts are organized into 12 regional circuits, each of which has a United States Court of Appeals.
