List of U.S. National Historic Landmarks by State
The United States is home to a vast array of National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), which are designated by the National Park Service as sites that hold national historical significance. This list provides an overview of National Historic Landmarks, organized by state, highlighting the diversity and cultural heritage preserved across the country.
Overview[edit]
A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, district, object, site, or structure that is officially recognized by the United States government for its outstanding historical significance. Only some 2,600 properties have been designated as NHLs, representing less than 0.04% of all properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service determines the eligibility of potential landmarks and formally nominates them to the Secretary of the Interior, who has the authority to designate a site as a National Historic Landmark.
Criteria for Designation[edit]
To be designated as an NHL, a site must meet at least one of the four criteria for historic significance. These criteria consider the site's association with significant historical events or activities, its connection to the lives of significant persons, its architectural or artistic value, or its potential to provide important information about prehistory or history.
