List of Italian DOC wines
List of Italian DOC Wines
The List of Italian DOC Wines refers to the comprehensive catalog of wines that have been granted the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in Italy. The DOC status is a quality assurance label for Italian wines, food products, and balsamic vinegar. It is granted by the Italian government to ensure that each product is produced according to specific rules designed to preserve traditional methods.
History
The DOC system was instituted in 1963 as part of Italy's wine laws to provide a structure for quality control and assurance. It was inspired by the French Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) system. The DOC system has undergone several changes and updates over the years, with the most significant being the introduction of the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 1980.
Criteria for DOC Status
To qualify for DOC status, a wine must meet several criteria. These include the geographical area of production, the varieties of grapes used, the maximum yield of grapes, the minimum alcohol content, the aging process, and the taste and aroma profile of the finished product. These criteria are established by a governing body, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.
